open by invitation And so Zorn was no longer a wanderer. His scent was to mingle with his new pack, adding on to the weave of his history. He could still remember the pack scent from his birth, so long ago and yet distinct enough to pick from a one-hundred wolf gathering. The big wolf missed the different strands of a big pack, but for now his, Zealot's and the third wolf's scents would have to be strong enough.
As it were, he volunteered almost immediately after his acceptance to strengthen the scent borders. He hadn't tasted any distinct pack around, but it was better to be safe. It would keep any of the local dogs away, too... Of course, unless they were hungry for females. Zorn had been mistaken - it wasn't that the females were in heat, or even accepting mates. There were simply no male scents.
And he knew that any other male would mistake this the same way. As a (new) member of the pack, it was his duty to protect his wolves at all costs. He was one with them, and they were one with him. Though he hadn't met the other female, her scent was not strong compared to the Alpha's. That brought Zorn to the border, back where he had met the Alpha just hours before.
With a lift of his leg, he added his scent to hers. It was good. The mix was strong. The big male began to track the border, marking at frequent intervals.

As much as she hated to leave Zealot's shadow there was work to be done...and it seemed the newest member of the pack had beat her to it....A male....of course. But from what she had learned of him thus far he seemed capable enough....and his scent was strong. It was important to have males among their ranks, what for reproductive purposes and all.....Vivian felt that as a female she could guard the pack just as effectively if not more so however. Hearing that another wolf had joined had given her mixed feelings....on one hand their family was growing stronger...larger...On the other hand she wondered about the fragile feelings she had started to grow for Zealot.....a male could offer something she most definitely could not...pups.
Forcing the silly thoughts from her mind Vivian forced herself back on task....she was not out here to day dream about things that were not even true.....Just because she felt a tingle from a touch meant nothing....she was blowing things way out of proportion like one of those love sick bitches that made her stomach turn. It did not take long for her to pick up the new males scent, especially seeing as how he was already marking the border. Quickening her pace it was only a matter of minutes before his dark form appeared amongst the snowy background...he was moving at a good pace.....Without so much as a hello Vivian moved to the trail he had already marked...about 15 ft behind him or so..... The snow was still yellow from his own sprinkling of urine, and although she didn't lift her leg as he did she did squat and leave her own scent not far from his. She moved ahead...marking again near his own scent....The more wolves from the pack that marked the border the better, but she was already beginning to feel that they would undoubtedly have a dominance issue between the two of them....It was obvious who their alpha was......but who of the duo would be dominant.
The hair along her spine began to stand on end...the more she followed his fluffy butt and smelled his odor the more she wanted to force her dominance on him....Make him follow her.. It was infuriating...the want to engage and yet the knowledge that he was an ally of hers. But there were not necessarily any rules against pack mates brawling....she just did not want to be seen as a trouble maker. She tried to reason this out in her skull....not wanting to displease Zealot.....but another few feet of following his fluffy dark bum and she had decided....she had to know. Stopping in his tracks a threatening growl rumbled from her throat, her tail springing upwards to the sky. What would his reaction be she wondered.....and would she get to taste his blood on her lips...

The wind pushed his packmate's scent towards him, so he anticipated her, briefly wondering what her temperament was. Perhaps she was the Beta? She was there before him. The Alpha may have began the pack with the third wolf long ago, and only just received him. If that was so, what would she think of him? Would she be a receiving female, or would she act more like the Alpha?
Still, it didn't bother him. The cold air hardly touched his skin under his nice bushy winter pelt, and he did his duty without boredom or impatience. The woods weren't as large as he'd thought earlier, but he would still have to move at a decent pace in order to cover the whole territory before dawn.
The approaching female caused his ear to flick, but perhaps she had a different plan than to bother him. He continued loping along, and was very quickly aware that the female was tailing him. Her scent, sharp and new, revealed that she was marking as well. Zorn continued on, believing she would catch up if she felt like it. So far, she was quiet. That was acceptable to him.
But then there was a warning growl behind him, one that made him stop in his tracks and turn slowly. He looked his packmate in the eye, saw her for the first time. She had a sleek silver pelt in the moonlight, and her eyes glinted gold. Eyes that appeared to despise him. She had an incredibly aggressive stance, just as serious as a challenge from a rival pack.
This confused him, but he wasn't going to aggravate the female, especially without knowing what kind of rank she held. For all he knew, she was an Omega trying to improve her standing with the Alpha. But she looked stronger than that... Still, his tail remained relaxed. He was bigger than she, and a male. Zorn didn't even raise his hackles. He tilted his head curiously, but mentally prepared himself for any sudden moves.
"Packmate," he greeted her. "The Alpha has accepted me as one of us. I am no intruder."
Truthfully, he had no idea what had provoked her anger. He didn't have her mistaken for some other wolf - her smell was as distinct as it had been when he'd first crossed these borders. "I am called Zorn," he said politely, watching her with eyes glowing. Maybe an introduction would set her mind at ease.

[atrb=border,0,true][atrb=style, width: 550px; height: 550px; background-image: url(http://fc00.deviantart.net/fs71/f/2012/254/7/1/vivian_by_looserfaceman-d5ecb6g.png)] Now that got his attention, he did not seem startled by her presence however...so he must have known she was trailing him. But obviously her act of aggression had been unexpected, his dark fluffy skull tilted in confusion as he turned to face her. With him she did not drop her gaze, but met his full on. He was confused, that much was apparent...and he was not an enemy not truly so she would not attack him without informing him as to why.....Technically if she wanted to engage a foe larger than herself in battle any little help would be taken.....but a pack mate she would not attack from behind....not without just cause. He quickly voiced his acceptance into the pack...and his name, obviously mistaking her advances. Zorn...what an odd name...
Taking another menacing step towards him she then paused, not relaxing her stance in the least. "I am aware of who you are...." Her voice was monotone...no anger....no fear, almost robotic. Mentally she was already beginning to pull herself away from the situation....she found she was much more successful in combat when she let her body take control.... "Vivian is what I am called...." He did not submit to her....a gutsy move for a newcomer...not that she had been here long herself....but he didn't know that. She did not think Zealot would award a high rank to a new wolf...she seemed much to intelligent to throw someone she barely knew into a place of power.....But Vivian's information about her was limited....as she had less time with her than she would like with all the duties she needed to perform. She knew not of her own rank...only that she was the first member to join this budding new pack, so she assumed she was just that...not a beta...not an omega....but simply a gear in the machinery that made up this pack. Soon however she hoped to climb the ladder....make herself essential to Zealot....
With stiff legs she advanced, she had not been notified that the new member was of a high rank....so she would assume he was not. She stopped only a few feet away from him, her head low to protect her throat, shoulders hunched, and tail stiff and fluffy as a pine tree branch. "However I don't know where we stand Zorn.....of what rank our alpha has bestowed upon you. And I have no intention of submitting to you." She said it matter a fact...no malice...no sarcasm...Just a rattling off of facts from her analytical mind....

The female encroached a bit closer, not that Zorn minded too much. She was angry for some reason or another. Her words told him that she knew... knew who he was, despite him only knowing her scent. Her voice was odd as well. It did not display her personality as his did, deep and sure, as it was. But, like the Alpha had, she seemed to take offense to whatever it was he did. Perhaps she just didn't trust the strangeness of him, the novelty.
Zorn, on the other hand, tended to trust his packmates with his life, even if it was a mistake. "Vivian is what I am called," she reciprocated, which was good. Even if she still kept her aggressive, angry stance, she gave him her name. She gave him something in return. It was always good to entrust a fellow wolf with one's identity. Vivian... he pondered, associating the word with her stoic, strong scent. A good name, he eventually concluded.
But then the she-wolf stalked closer and closer. Zorn truly didn't want to fight with the pack already. It had been less than a day since the Alpha had clamped her jaws over his muzzle, and the male wasn't about to throw that away. "I don't know where we stand, Zorn..." Vivian continued, still very serious about attacking him. He knew for a fact that she wanted to establish herself as dominant. Zorn would have false intentions if he said he didn't as well. Still, though, now was not the time or place. A new pack needed trust, not petty squabbles. As far as he was concerned, both himself and Vivian were to be the Betas, the second-in-commands to Zealot.
"I have no intention of submitting to you."
And there it was. Just as straightforward as him. This could pose a problem... But not now. This was not the time. But he would not break eye contact. It wasn't in his nature. "I will not falsify my words. I have no intention of settling a dispute so early. We have just met." His ears were still up, his tail still relaxed (maybe even swinging lazily), and he stared Vivian in the eye. His voice rumbled, as it tended to. "I do not concede dominance to you. But neither will I fight. We have a duty to the pack, not to decide who is meant to stand higher."
Finally, he made up his mind. As he turned to continue along the border, he said, "For the time being, we are equals. The pack is more important right now." And with that, he turned her back on her - a gesture of trust, a weak extension of a truce - and continued his duty. Hierarchy means nothing with such a small pack, he thought, heavy paws crushing the snow.

She felt chastened, once his words came they seemed to never stop...in the end he was correct...And she could see that even through her desires. She said nothing for several moments but stared at the larger male. Her pride burned for her to retaliate....to make him feel her teeth against his throat, the cold earth on his back.....She bristled with anticipation.....perhaps she was a bit too blood thirsty to survive amongst a pack. It was an unsettling thought...She seemed to almost melt, her tail falling down and her rigid stance sinking.... "You are right...." She said at last, her words clipped but lacking the anger she felt. "But the next time we meet Zorn, I will accept no excuses." She gave him a slight tip of her skull, a goodbye of sorts before she took off in the opposite direction to mark the borders that he had not yet reached....Perhaps it would be best if they came to meet in the middle......For is she followed his fluffy bum any longer she would not be able to refrain from biting it.....
