That was it, she told herself. She gave up. What was the point in wandering around and around for weeks on end, getting more lost with each day that passed, to end up finding absolutely nothing. Point, there was no point. It had been a good few weeks now since the small wolf had been chased up into the mountains by the dogs of Vera Harbour, and since then, she hadn’t come across any other canine forms. Not a single one and it was quite safe to say, it was driving her crazy. Yes, she did enjoy being alone a lot of the time. And yes, she liked her own company more than she did that of others, but this constant loneliness was what she hated.
At home, she’d merely run off to her den when she felt the need for her own space, then returned to her pack a few hours later when there were chores to be done. She’d spend a couple of hours in her own company, day dreaming or snoozing, then reappear when she felt the need for contact and affection. But never had she spent so long away from another creature. It wasn’t a life she was enjoying.
Today had passed rather quickly, something that wasn’t all too uncommon at present. Jana spent half the morning dozing, too bored to do anything – an entire contradiction within itself. But nevertheless, she’d just slept. By the time she’d woken up, it was already mid-afternoon, so she’d simply set off in whatever direction she was facing in the hunt for food. Food; her stomach grumbled at the thought of it. It had been a fair few days since she’d eaten and it was gradually getting to her. Going for days without food was something she really didn’t like, for Jana thoroughly enjoyed her food. She’d managed to pick off old carcasses left by the dogs in the city, but out here, everything was too fast for her to chase alone. She was much too bulky and heavy to keep up any speed, puffing and panting after only a few minutes of running. Overweight? Far beyond it.
It had been a fair few hours since she’d set off and now her feet were becoming sore, though she didn’t really wish to stop. Dogs had spoken of a pack within the forest, one full of wolves that tore dogs limb from limb. Whether that was true or not was a different matter, but Jana was rather curious about this pack. She half wanted to find them, to join them, but equally, she feared they’d merely turn her away due to her appearance. It was no lie that she was a chubby, stumpy little thing – not exactly desirable in a pack. But she was pure bulk and strength. She could knock a wolf over with one swipe of a paw and crush a dog by simply sitting on them. Hopefully their alpha would look upon her as useful for protection, rather than a useless blob of a pup.
She stopped right by the edge of the forest, curiously peering through the trees as far as her eyes could see in the low light. It seemed practically empty, but the strong scent marks left by the pack covered the area, so they were certainly real creatures. Not mere myths, as the dogs had made them sound. She was so out of touch with pack life that she feared dismissal, but after a few moments of contemplating turning back around, Jana tilted her head backwards and let a long, low howl fill the skies. It was a call that offered no threat, merely a request for the alpha’s presence.

With a pack den now secured, Zealot felt more at ease. She could never relax fully, as it wasn't in her nature to simply lie back and assume things would go the way she wanted, but she was nonetheless relieved of a large portion of stress. She showed this by taking a few moments to simply lay in a patch of sun, eyes drifting closed as she dozed lightly. Her ears remained alert, swiveling to and fro as they listened to the sounds of the forest, discerning what needed true attention and what did not. The black and tan wolf stretched out her limbs and rolled over onto her back, pushing her legs into the air with a mighty yawn.
A low howl reverberated through the forest. A summons.
It seemed an alpha could get no alone time.
Zealot laughed at herself. She couldn't care less how much time she spent alone. In truth, she'd rather be sleeping lazily in the company of her wolves, a light conversation between them, happy and secure with life. On that thought, Zealot righted herself, rising to her paws as she lifted her skull. Her muzzle went rigid, a howl lifting from her chest and rising into the chill evening air. She would meet this new wolf, whomever it was. As the last notes of her howl drifted away, the alpha shook out her coat and started North toward the border with Dead Man's Ridge.
The trees grew apart, the foliage thinning, as she approached the border. This was new forest, where trees were only a couple years old. They didn't retain the warmth of the forest as the ancient trunks near the pack den did. Zealot was glad that her winter coat had grown in thick and fluffy, even if it did give her a slightly marshmallow-like appearance. Her nose caught the scent of the female wolf, she gleaned sex and species from scent alone, before her silver gaze found her. If she hadn't already smelled the wolf-scent on the creature, she'd have turned her away with punishing fangs for what she saw. As it was, she had to know more before a decision could be made. The canine she laid eyes on stood short, only as tall as would be a yearling pup, her features chubby and... well, fat. But it was the markings that set Zealot on edge. This wolf bore an exact resemblance to domesticated dogs breeds such as the Siberian Husky or Alaskan Malamute, which meant this could be a hybrid. A low growl rumbled in her ribs as she paused at the border, in plain view.
"Be you wolf or dog?" Her typical greeting was forgone, her words a husky command for information. The alpha's tail was raised in an arc over her back, ears forward and eyes open fully. Her legs were stiff. She wouldn't become aggressive just yet, she needed to know more before she jumped into a fight with the fat thing. Even if this new canine was shorter, she certainly had a weight advantage. Zealot didn't want to imagine what it would feel like to be bowled over by this creature.
NOTES. just fyi i have given Zombie permission to toss Vivian into any thread Zealot is in, given that Vivian is acting as an unofficial bodyguard. if you take issue with this i can simply ask her to stay out of this thread ^-^

{ooc: fine by me if zombie joins with Vivian at any point. Zealot has another lesbian wolfie to play with now haha}
She paused, maw still raised to the heavens and ears perked, awaiting a response. It felt like forever and a day passed by before her call was answered, but in reality it was a mere minute or so. The reply was strong and loud, meaning that the stranger wasn’t too far away. It also held a regal air, filled with dominance. Yes, the alpha has responded to her and it was a female. Instantly, Jana felt her heart begin to flutter and her legs start to quiver. It was half from excitement and half from fear as she switched her weight from foot to foot, snow crunching beneath her.
Before now, she’d joined several little packs so she was aware of the protocol of submission, but each set of wolves had their different ways and entry requirements. Practically all of her previous packs had been male orientated, alphas and higher ranks being filled by the male of the species. This pack was the first she had come across to be led by a female. Already, she liked it. The idea of a woman in power, it made her spine shiver and her fur stand on end. She only hoped that the alpha approved of her.
Not all of the packs she’d come across had accepted her, of course. Some she’d been forced from territories, even chased (which she had not enjoyed, for the majority of the time, wolves had caught up with her) due to her size or appearance. It was no lie that she was bulkier and smaller than most wolves, a force to be reckoned with in battle. Yes, her size was due to her gluttonous attitude towards food, but equally because of her muscle. She had spent a lot of time training in her home land and many more hours walking across harsh terrain, so her legs had gradually grown stronger over time.
Alongside that, however, was the appearance of her coat. Many wolves had looked down upon her, for she looked more dog than wolf in some folk’s eyes. Despite her markings, she was wolf through and through, just a little…odd looking.
The stranger approached slowly through the trees and instantly Jana felt the tension in the air. She took a submissive position, rapidly tucking her tail between her legs and letting her ears rest atop her skull. She wished to show she was no threat, but it seemed the alpha was more concerned with her breeding. “I am wolf, through and through.” The smaller creature answered confidently, with the slightest haste. “I am no hybrid, nor do I bear any tainted blood, I assure you.” Her head dipped respectfully. “My name is Jana Phrixus. I hail from a northern clan.” She explained softly. “I wish to offer myself and my loyalty to you, and your pack.”
Briefly, she glanced upwards towards the stranger, awaiting her words. Yet, for a few moments, she could not help but let her eyes linger across the larger female's body, before returning to her gaze to the ground.

She knew this would happen...she left Zealot's side for one millisecond and it seemed like every canine in the country wanted an impromptu meeting with her. Not that she had to follow Zealot.....it was not even expected of her...she just....wanted to though for what reason she still was not sure....She tried to play it off as just being a loyal member of the pack....but her devotion was getting to almost a stalker like intensity....and even she was getting aggravated with herself, she had no idea how Zealot tolerated her....and would probably be reprimanded soon enough for being such a tag along. Vivian was already on her feet by the time the howl ended, she could tell the other canine was not close.....most likely on the very opposite side of the territory...But that would not stop her..well...not for long anyway. A sickening crunch and a swallow sent the tiny ground squirrel down her gullet, a rivulet of blood sent rolling down her chin so much was her haste. With a grunt the silver hued female forced herself to run, not her normal mile eating trot...but a true heart rattling lungs burning run.
Even with all her haste her ever vigilant alpha beat her to the location, she slowed to a crawl as Crow's easy vocals broadcasted to the other ....wolf? She was an odd looking one if so....she smelled of wolf, but lately she had encountered more hybrids than not...it was possible this canine was one. But Crow was quick to get to the point, not mincing words. She was not far from either of them now, slithering among the underbrush like a snake. Careful to place each paw where it would fall silently. When she was at a location just slightly to the rear of the newcomer she stopped, sinking down so that her muscles coiled like springs....Ready to assist Zealot if needed....Though she knew her alpha more than capable of taking care of herself....she wanted to guard her from harm...
Suddenly the squat little canine began speaking, spouting so many words Vivian felt she would never shut up....She claimed her blood to be true, though Vivian did not trust her word....She smelled of wolf...but many hybrids did as well. It was not her place to intervene however so she kept her trap shut, simply waiting and watching. Gauging the situation.....This Jana as she called herself did not act as a threat, though she did not completely submit either. However none of that was Vivian's concern, Zealot would make this plump little creature kneel......But when those roaming eyes of hers trailed over Zealot's frame Vivian felt as if a spark had ignited within her chest. With a low growl she rose from the bushes, moving to circle around the backside of the little canine...essentially trapping her between the two wolves....The hair along her neck prickled, the muscles in her legs stiffened....though she did not fully understand it she did not want this female eyeing Zealot....apprising her sculpted form....But as much as she wanted to attack...to taste this bitches blood, she held herself back. Standing behind her with a menacing glare instead, her long silver tail twitching back and forth with agitation...She was hoping....hoping she would give her a valid reason to make her bleed....

The black and tan alpha remained quiet as the pudgy one spoke, introducing herself and expressing her intentions. Zealot let her silver gaze inspect the submissive posture of the wolf, and her own body relaxed minutely. She took note of Vivian's presence, though she ignored it outwardly. If the wolf wanted to play sidekick, she wasn't going to stop her. Just so long as she didn't cause troub--Zealot noticed the low growl that came from the silver female. For a moment she just stood there, her eyes switching from Vivian to Jana and back again. She hadn't seen Jana's assessing gaze. She didn't know why Vivian seemed upset. Zealot clicked her teeth, a snarl forming on her muzzle for a moment as she directed her attention to Vivian. If she was going to be here, she wasn't going to cause trouble.
Losing the snarl, the alpha returned her attention to the fat wolf. She wanted to join the pack. She said she was pure wolf. Zealot believed her. No creature would be foolish enough to lie when caught between two wolves. Not even a dog. So it was time to test her. Jana had already proven at least somewhat willing to submit as her posture was one that screamed "I'm no threat," but Zealot came forward anyway. She moved with confidence, approaching Jana as though she had known her for years and knew exactly how she would react. This was an important part of her tactics. One can get away with anything if they carry an air of complete confidence. Without hesitation the alpha came straight on, moving slightly to the left so she could stand with her head at Jana's shoulder (and vice versa). She put her chin directly over top the fat wolf's shoulderblades and applied downward pressure.
This was her test of wolves wanting to join the pack. Word was beginning to spread, even into Vera Harbor, of it. The dogs couldn't understand why it was so important to roll over and play bitch, nor how anyone could have any dignity afterward. But that was why they were dogs, not wolves. They didn't need to depend upon a pack to survive, they had trashcans (Zealot grimaced at the thought) to ravage for food. They found their own shelter in buildings, hunted no prey, and typically became fat and power-hungry. They fought each other to the death over the simplest things. Meaningless things. Like a cheeseburger wrapper. There was just no meaning to life in the city. Here in the wild one must have incredible abilities or a pack to survive.
But with a pack came a bond that was indescribable. Though they were not related by blood, the wolf pack worked as a family. They cared for each other, regardless of whether their own personalities clashed, because without one the others became weak. It was a beautiful balance of strength and intelligence. One that Zealot wouldn't give up for the world. And one that no dog or hybrid could ever understand.

Vivian’s presence remained unknown to the plump wolf, until the last second. The wind had briefly played in her favour, picking up just as she had appeared and shifting her scent in the opposite direction. Jana was not expecting an ambush. This was a request to join, not one that even signalled attack and in all fairness, she was a little unsure of what to do with herself. Should she defend herself again the stranger, possibly growling at a fellow pack member and breaking her graces with the alpha before her? No, she decided as she once again glanced upwards at the larger female before her. Judging on her reaction, the stranger to her rear was a pack member, acting somewhat out of place. The chubby wolf stayed still, eyes returning to the floor once she understood what was going on.
It wasn’t entirely unusual for several members of a pack to come and greet her when she requested to join, but having one acting so irrationally was something she’d never experience before. Of course, she was completely unaware that Vivian’s reaction was due to her slight scanning of the pretty alpha female before her. Zealot appeared to have no noticed, however, something Jana was rather pleased with, though it did not show. She held her position, remaining as submissive and loose as she could manage, but Vivian’s presence made her severely uncomfortable. There was a slight stiffness to her limbs, insecurity pulsing through her.
Once the grey female was back in her place, the alpha approached her. She set her head on her back – a move Jana was completely unfamiliar with – and applied a downward force upon her body. It didn’t feel like much, but after a few short moments of hesitation, the younger female got the hint. This was their ritual for submission, the act which decided whether or not a wolf was to become one with the family, or to be chased into the hills. She reacted appropriately, slowly lowering herself to the ground (no jerky movements, of course, or else she feared Vivian might sprout up and start growling at her again) until she finally hit the snow. The world suddenly felt so still, so silent, as if every presence and conscience within the forest was watching them in awe, waiting. In all honesty, she could not help but remain somewhat defensive in the presence of Vivian, so tucked all of her limbs beneath her. She moved her head, exposing her throat to Zealot as a sign of submission and averted her eyes in the opposite direction, ears flicking to the side.
While she would happily submit to the alpha, it was Vivian that made her somewhat unsure. She seemed to be the type of creature with a somewhat alpha air about, but one that merely demanded submission through fear, rather than respect like Zealot. Already, the short wolf sensed she would have issues with the grey female, her stubborn heart instantly wanting to ignore every word that the grey wolf said, even if it got her injured.
Moments seemed to turn into hours as she waited in excruciating silence to see if her moves were correct.

She had let her emotions get the better of her...she knew as much, but Zealot's quick correction was enough to put her back in her place. Quickly her lips slid over her teeth, tail drooping as her alpha drew near.....she had overstepped her boundaries.....and that was something she knew she would regret later.. Pressing her ears harshly against her silver skull she watched as Zealot moved forward to press down upon the other female, even chastened as she was she watched for any signs of aggression.....better to get a thrashing from her alpha than watch some stranger injure her...But it was an uneventful submission, and after several tense moments the short 'wolf' lowered herself to the earth, twisting her skull to reveal the soft skin beneath her neck....
She was adding unneeded tension to this meeting....she could feel it in the air....it was almost palatable....Every twitch of the squat canine was duly noted by her golden gaze. But she had submitted...and no aggressive actions were detected...though she was noticeably tense. She should leave......Zealot had things under control......but the lingering image of her appraising gaze.....it aggravated her to no end. Lowering her skull to her alpha she continued to stand watch...careful to not let another growl leak from her lips....Even though she had an overwhelming urge to claim Zealot as her own.....And let this female know that she was treading on dangerous ground...It was not true of course.....Zealot was not hers, nowhere near it....but that did not sate her instinctual desire to protect what she felt was hers..With her head and tail lowered she watched the two of them, tension visible in every muscle of her body.

Zealot was satisfied as the wolf sank beneath her touch. Her submission was that of defense, one that every member so far had given. It was respectable. And appropriate, given Vivian's presence and the odds stacked against the newcomer. But Zealot's test wasn't over yet. She one more thing to do. While this first part tested a willingness to concede to a superior, the second would test the very resolve of the wolf. Zealot imagined that she wouldn't have been able to stand it if she was put in Jana's position, but, then again, she probably would never have to. Not unless Zorn got a wild hair up his rear end and overthrew her. She almost laughed at the thought.
Zealot lifted a paw and placed it on the fat wolf's back. She held it there for a moment, just a heartbeat, as she shifted weight. The paw slid down to touch the ground on the other side (stretching Zealot's form more than the others had...), so that the alpha stood completely over the female. The black and tan wolf lowered her muzzle, pressing it against the exposed side of Jana's neck. She smelled of new plant life, like fresh grass in spring. After a few moments Zealot lifted her skull again, this time moving toward the fat wolf's muzzle. Without hesitation she took it in her own, her teeth resting firmly (but not painfully) on the tender flesh of Jana's nose. This was Zealot's final test. She took the last defense a wolf had, its only true weapon, away from it. Luckily, she understood how one might react, and was merciful enough to make the action short. After only a few heartbeats she released. When she tried to move away she nearly tripped on Jana's bulk, recovering as though nothing had happened.
"You are part of the Scarlet Forest Pack." The words were unceremonious, but said with a congratulatory air, nonetheless. Zealot couldn't stop her tail from wagging, all stiffness leaving her body. This would mark her third member. The pack was growing quickly. Wolves came with a longing for a pack. A knowledge. And, more importantly, no dogs had yet had the balls to show up. This was going much better than she had thought it would. The alpha reached out and gave Jana a lick on the muzzle. She tasted of new grass, too.

{sorry for the delay and shortness, I've got work and a meeting!}
Time continued to move unmercifully slow, or appeared to at least. Every move was performed slowly, delicately and Jana found herself begging for this ceremony to hurry as she could barely manage to sit still any longer. She could feel her entire body becoming ready to start shaking with excitement, a tingly feeling washing over her as the final test began.
The alpha female placed a paw upon her back momentarily, then slid it down the side of her body. A small burst of a shiver shook through her, but the chubby wolf regained her composure a short moment later. At the back of her head, all that she could think about was how wonderful it was to have the touch of another creature once again, as she’d barely been in contact with anyone since abandoning the city. And even then, it had all been violent contact; scuffles and fights, nothing nice about any of it. While this wasn’t suppose to be nice, it was it was supposed to be a ceremony, the younger of trio couldn’t help but let her tail wag once and briefly, at the mere thought of even being part of a pack again.
Her muzzle was taken firmly between the jaws of the stranger. Jana held her breathe, fearing the slightest move would have her missing a nose. But there was nothing to be vaguely fearful about, as it was quickly released again. She wriggled her nose and snorted quietly, still trying to stop herself from bouncing up and down. In reality, such a ceremony should have been something that she was used to by now, but every time she was introduced to a pack, she was always the same. Acting like an excited child and always attempting to contain herself as she awaited the review and the outcome. And as usual, the outcome was good. She’d done everything right and now she had a family again. Her tail instantly started to wag and her ears perked forwards, as she was given a brief lick as a welcome.
Keeping her movements slow due to Vivian’s presence, she rose from the ground and turned to return the lick, offering a quiet “Thank you.” To her new alpha…Whose name she still didn’t know. Nor did she know the grey wolf’s, or her position within the pack. She kept low, but she couldn’t help wriggling with excitement.

The alpha stood where she was for quite some time before she realized that she hadn't introduced herself or Vivian. At any other time this might have been considered rude. Zealot didn't think so, in light of the current situation. Dominance protocol came before anything else in the wolf pack. "I am Zealot." She didn't need to say what rank she was, it was obvious. "This is Vivian." She switched her gaze from the pudgy wolf to the silver female. Vivian obviously wasn't all fluffy bunnies and rainbows, but she definitely wasn't a complete hardass. At least by what Zealot had seen of her. She was a loyal member that cared for her pack, even if she was a bit more dominant than most wolves. She was tough. Zealot sensed a dominance dispute between Vivian and the sole male member, Zorn, was close at hand. But it would happen when it did, and was of no concern right now.
"Ranks here are not set in stone." As she spoke, Zealot turned and padded lightly into the forest, intending for the two to follow. Now that she had a pack den, she would be showing each new member where it was. It was a big forest and she didn't want a newcomer getting lost on their first day. "Though it should come instinctively to most, it is sometimes best explained." Zealot stepped over a low-lying thorny plant. "The alpha is dominant over the pack. The pack members, however, decide who is dominant amongst themselves." She looked back at Vivian. "Vivian, for example, is of a more dominant personality. She won't submit easily. Zorn, our other member and only male in the pack, is the same way. For Vivian and Zorn to remain on the same rung of the pack's ladder can only end in a dominance dispute."
The black and tan female approached the wall of foliage that surrounded the pack den's clearing. Ducking her head, she shut her eyes (having remembered the painful leaf to the eye the first time) and pushed through it. Once on the other side, she shook out her coat. "The disputes are mostly just posturing, one wolf trying to intimidate the other. Usually one wolf realizes the other one is more powerful and backs down. But sometimes the two are so evenly matched in wills that nothing but a fight can come of it." The alpha picked up a trot, tail over her back but relaxed. She crossed the small grassy clearing and stopped before the den entrance between the two boulders. She snuffled around for a moment, poking her head inside. She snorted to clear her nose then out her back to a boulder and sat, facing the two. "Dominance fights are monitored by the alpha, if only so they can make sure that no maiming occurs."
Zealot used a paw to clear snow from beneath her. "A pack cannot afford two members who seek blood from each other." The words were more warning than statement. "This, however, is the pack den." With that she fell silent, placing her paws before her and sliding slowly down into a laying position. A yawn stretched her muzzle. One might think she was lazy, tired, somehow off her guard. That couldn't be farther from the truth. There was a minute tensing of her muscles, just an ounce of stiffness in her neck. It didn't matter if she had known these wolves for years or minutes, she was always alert when with her pack. It is what kept them safe.

{sorry this sucks, Jana doesn't have any questions if you wanna end here?}
The alpha introduced herself as Zealot and the grey stranger as Vivian; Jana made a mental note that she hoped would stick. Her short term memory often had a habit of wiping itself clean, unless she really focused on remembering something. After a while, names would stand firm in her head and she would eventually add a name to a face, but she didn’t expect such a thing to be difficult at present since she’d only met these two. She offered a little nod of her head to Vivian as the grey female’s name was offered to her, but uttered nothing else, before starting to follow her new alpha.
In silence, the stout creature listened to every word that left Zealot’s lips regarding the pack and its rules. She understood the basics of ranks, but her attention did not waiver as everything was explained and the situation between Vivian and Zorn was discussed. It was fairly obvious that there weren’t many within the pack at the present time, without having Zealot explain it. The forest they walked through smelt strongly of the three current members, waves of scent wafting towards her nose and becoming slowly imprinted within her head. So there was Vivian, the cranky one; Zorn, the only male and Zealot, quite obviously the alpha. And now, there was her. Every other pack she’d joined upon her travels had been bustling with members, a cross combination of wolves and wolf-dog hybrids, whose numbers were vast and territory beyond measure. Already she had guessed that no hybrids would ever be present here, due to Zealot’s initial reaction to her dog like markings, which was something she didn’t mind. And with numbers so low, it meant she had the perfect opportunity to prove herself.
In previous packs, she’d usually kept on the bottom rung (certainly if a wolf hater was in charge) or been used as pack protection, a little higher up the ranks. She’d been the bulk, the body guard, even the pup protector when necessary. Here, she had the chance to do all of that and more, if she could push herself up a few notches. Her size and weight were easy to use against others, even if she was smaller. All of that would be sorted in due course though. For now, it was simply a case of settling in.
She followed through the brush and into the clearing, a somewhat peaceful little place that seemed rather homely, before following to the mouth of the den, then taking a seat. Sitting on snow didn’t bother her much, she did after all have plenty of layers to keep her warm. Fur, fat, muscle – it all helped. She nodded as Zealot finished, taking a brief moment to glance around at her new home. It was certainly a beautiful place, one she would treasure and try her best to keep safe. All the while, she was trying to think of anything that she could ask, but Zealot had covered the majority and she was simply left in awe of the new home she had. “I understand.” Was all she could think to say as she finally returned her glance to her alpha. Safe to say, she was going to like it here.
