Appearance: With such a variety of breeds combining to create her, you’d expect that Toothless would have a rather strange appearance to her. But the reality is, she merely appears to be just a bulky looking Swiss Shepherd with a few flecks upon her coat and slightly curled fur on the ears. It’s easy to say that the owners of her parents were foolish to let her breed, but in reality, her mother’s humans had no idea what ‘fun’ she was up to in the middle of the night; cavorting with a stray dog she’d fallen for. Despite the odd mix, she has always seemed in decent health, however.
She has the appearance of the usual Swiss Shepherd, which is very similar to the German variety; square bodied and steadfast, with good strong limbs and neat frame, perfect for an attack dog. However, the addition of the Malamute in her veins makes her slightly stockier than the usual Swiss, giving her more leg power, but equally more bulk. She often seems like a force to be reckoned with, towering above most that pass by her. Of course, she’s no Irish wolfhound or Great Dane, but she’s certainly above the medium sized dog category. Her coat matches the Swiss colouring, being a milky, off colour white but has the curl of a setter.
Her remaining breeds actually contribute more to appearance rather than body type. The Dalmatian in her leaves light liver flecks all over her skin (which are obviously hidden on most of her body by fur) but they are more apparent around the very tip of her muzzle, as well as her underside. She appears to have been splashed with a little mud. The Setter adds to the flecks here and there, but changes her coat by adding the slightest curl to her fur. The backs of her ears, however, are very tightly curled.
Quite typical to most dogs, Toothless originally had the usually chocolate brown eyes of many of her species. Yet, due to the radiation leak, this had changed. They are now apple green, with a few odd flecks of brown still present. From a distance, they are easily visible when caught by the light and she is often mistaken for some form of feline when her body isn’t completely visible. They are certainly striking. Skin wise, she’s the usual baby pink of most canines, but this pink actually combines with her Dalmatian genes, causing her skin to become spotted. Her tongue, gums, pads, belly and even her nose are all pink based, with splotches of black. It seems quite funky and is one of the few things that really makes her unique.
The other thing that makes her completely unique is her legs. It’s easy to spot at first glance that Toothless is no normal dog, as she’s missing a leg; her left hind leg, to be exact. It’s cut off from just below the thigh, leaving her with the remnants of a leg in the form of a barely visible stump. It blends in with her coat, making it difficult to see. While most would consider such a thing to be a complete disadvantage, years with only three legs have allowed Toothless to adapt over time. Her remaining back leg was already blessed with the muscular power of the malamute, but being used over an over has allowed the leg to grown stronger, meaning she now has an excellent propelling system in the form of her single leg. It may be the radiation aiding her, but her only spring leg often makes her feel faster than a speeding bullet. She isn’t, of course, but don’t tell her that. Although three legs is often seen as a disadvantage, Toothless is no pushover, so do be careful with her.
Personality: Despite losing a leg, Toothless has not lost her pride. If put in a situation where she could run and survive, or fight but keep her honour; she would fight to the death. She will rarely allow anyone to aid her, preferring to manipulate folk to get things her way, so then it seems as though she has done it alone. She trusts rarely, believing that if she trusts someone else, they were let her down, while she would never let herself down. A former police dog, she is used to being obedient and listening to her handler, but only truly obeys commands when a female is in charge. She is a guard dog to the core and will stand firm on her territory, protecting those few who do gain her faith and trust, if they are in danger. When trying to get what she wants, she will happily manipulate a dog in any way she can manage, even if that sometimes means having to be the submissive one; which, oddly, she sometimes enjoys; especially if it means her getting some decent attention from a lady friend.
She can often come across as grumpy, due to her short, sharp temper and occasionally sarcastic, patronising manner. However, the reality is that she merely wants company. She craves some form of partner, but is very aware of the fact that female dogs who like other females are rare, if not completely none existent in the harbour. While she dreams of having pups, she knows it will never happen. If the opportunity arose where she could adopt a lost youngster, she most certainly would. Despite a slight lack in the patience department, she adores youngsters and seems to be a changed dog around them. She is mature but occasionally selfish to the point of childishness, very rarely sharing her meals though expecting others to share theirs. She’ll flirt with most things that move, though it’s often merely to gain the trust of strangers and to avoid having to defend herself.
Likes:
. alone time; After years of living alone, it’s no surprise that Toothless is used to being by herself. She is one that enjoys being able to walk away from someone after a chat and going off into her own little bubble, where she can dream and forget about the world. She doesn’t like people constantly looking over her shoulder, or forever being surrounded. She likes to escape from groups and sit in her own corner and just think.
. company; Yes, she likes along time, but equally, she craves company. She likes to have the free will to chose when she wants company and when she does not, yes, but in her heart, she often prefers to be snuggled up alongside someone in silence or simply chatting quietly. Big groups, she prefers to avoid them. She doesn’t feel comfortable surrounded by a group of more than five dogs she knows, or more than three that she doesn’t. It makes her feel boxed in.
. girls; Completely contradictory to nature, Toothless does not like the males of the species. Past experiences have left a bitter taste in her mouth, sure, but even before then, she found herself more attracted to the females of the canine community. Even when it came to humans, she much preferred working with the women rather than the men. Women, she listened to. She offered them respect, gave them her complete attention and did everything on command. She even rolled over and offered them her throat. Men – entirely different story. She bit, she barked, she pulled, she growled, she fought and point blank refused to listen to them. The same continues today with dogs. She’s more likely to expose herself to a female than a male, more likely to take orders from a girl than a boy.
. meat; Once upon a time, Toothless was a police dog and given that her position was important, she needed the best to train. She was given proper meals, full to bursting with decent meat. Steaks, usually. From a very young age, Toothless has loved her meat. Toss her a leg and she’ll love you forever. Give her a steak, she’ll do whatever you ask. Meat is a weakness.
. water; A lot of dogs cower from the rain, but Toothless actually enjoys it. Her setter breeding means that a lot of the water slides off easily. Rain usually means that the world is hiding, so she has chance to enjoy the world around her. She equally loves puddles and small bodies of water, but she actually has a fear of larger bodies of uncontrolled water.
. having three legs; If most dogs were Toothless, they would probably sit and complain constantly about the fact that their former owner had allowed them to lose a leg. They would be forever nagging, saying how things could have been different and how they would have changed things, and how wonderful it would be to have four legs again. Toothless, well, she just doesn’t care. Yeah, at first she complained about it, got angry that due to an ‘incompetent human’ (something she really didn’t mean) had caused her to lose her leg. But now, she’s proud of who she is. She defends the fact that she has only three legs, considers it a privilege that she lost it for the reasons she did and is proud to display herself in public. She trains herself to keep that leg especially, in the best condition and growls quite fiercely at anyone who says anything against her disability.
. likes it rough; Toothless likes things rough in several ways. While she isn’t keen on physical fighting, she strangely likes her relationships to be rough. She enjoys fighting for dominance in a relationship, as well as being controlled by another female. There’s some sort of sexual thrill about being a little slave dog. Equally, she likes her entire life to be rough. If it was all easy, as it had been when she was part of the force, it would never be at all interesting.
Dislikes:
. large bodies of uncontrolled water; Safe to say, she isn’t very keen on it. Since youth, she’s been frightened of the sea and of lakes, due to an accident as a baby where she nearly drowned.
. men; As previously mentioned, she isn’t keen on males. She’ll put up with them, but will rarely take a shine to any that are a pain in the ass. Youngsters or those who offer her kindness or respect, she’ll put up with them, maybe even mother them sometimes. Older males, she tends to avoid and snaps at them.
. being constantly alone; While she craves alone time, she loathes wandering aimlessly around the world. She would most likely be inclined to join some form of group or gang, to at least feel needed in the world, but due to the fact she isn’t too eager to approach large strange groups, there is very little chance of that happening.
. physical fighting; Yes, she has muscle and power on herself, but in all fairness, Toothless does not like to fight. She knows that she has a physical disadvantage and while she often riles up rapidly, she much prefers to stick to words of combat over actions.
. the fact that she can’t have pups; It kills her and fuels her hatred of males, despite the fact that it’s a born, physical disability that she cannot conceive, not the fault of the farm dogs that bred with her continuously in her youth. In secret, she craves a pup of her own biological make up.
History:
• Toothless was born to two crossbreed dogs and to a loving family, with happy children, plenty of places to run and all the treats she could eat. She was named Boo by the only girl in a three child family, as the little girl thoroughly enjoyed watching Monster’s Inc. At birth, she had all four legs and was a happy pup, always playing with her three brothers.
• When she turned 3 months, she was stolen and sold to a farmer in another district, who was not as kind. Her days were no longer bright and sunny, but dark and violent. For the first year of her life, she was used as a chew toy for a group of guard dogs on a local farm, who chased her round and round in circled till her chain lead choked her or she ran out of breath, then each had their way with her. By the age of two, she’d already been pregnant, but miscarried. She’d been bought to breed, but seemed unable to. The truth was, she was barely fertile; the chances of her conceiving her around 5%. Unable to get rid of her, a pile of bones that had been torn to shreds by other dogs, she was merely tied to a fence and left for the dogs to casually destroy.
• Lucky for Toothless, a Police raid of the farm saved her. A young cop took a shine to her, the nervous white pup who cowered from human touch, and took her home. The young woman, named Sara Carter, too her home and rehabilitated her, then trained her as a police dog. Toothless adored Sara, did anything for her, slept beside her in her home, guarded the house and was accepted onto the force at three and a half years of age, ready to start out her life in the force. She was renamed Toothless, due having one of her back teeth plucked out and it leaving a large hole.
• The first few months went well, but it wasn’t until a large raid that involved half of the canine unit that Toothless and Sara were caught up in the fray. A bomb exploded, killing Sara and almost crushing Toothless beneath a sheet of metal. She was cut off for long, agonising hours from the world and no one came looking for her since Sara was gone. She was just a dog; she didn’t matter to her human colleagues. She was left to die, only being discovered up in her final hours of the night by a canine colleague and taken to the vet, to be told her leg would never return. She was due to be put down after aggressive outbursts towards the vet staff, but a friend of Sara’s snuck her out, hoping that she wouldn’t be euthanized.
• The only trouble was, Sara’s friend Elise had nowhere to put Toothless. Her back yard was small, barely enough room for the dog to run around. Garden size allowed the crossbreed to slowly heal, rarely giving her chance to exert herself and break her stitches, but she felt herself going borderline insane cooped up with no room to breathe. So, once her leg had strength and she’d eaten her last meal, she bolted from the garden at the first chance, leaving the humans behind her.
• She was a stray when the rebellion began, living her life on the streets with only her wits keeping her alive. She learnt how to take care of herself, followed small groups for brief periods but always returned to travelling alone after a few weeks. She wandered in and out of places, barely staring in one too long.
• While she still has plenty of places to discover, Vera Harbour has been her home for a good few months now.
